Planning a wedding during an economic slowdown can be tough. The last thing anyone wants to do during a recession is take on more debt, especially the job outlook is unclear. The good news though is there are clever ways to save money on a wedding without sacrificing quality. The key thing to do is take on a lot of the work yourself.

When you hire a wedding planner, you have to pay for that wedding planners time. Also, while the wedding planner will always do his or her best to plan a great wedding to fit your budget, he or she will never be able to read your mind about what your priorities are. How much do you really want to skimp on wedding invitations or the band? While you may communicate well with the wedding planner, it's always hard to tell someone where exactly to drawl the line in terms of savings.

There are some areas where if you put forward a little bit of hard work, you can save solid money planning your own wedding. For example, you can try to design and make your own wedding invitations. In the past, this would have been nearly impossible to do. But now, thanks to computers and the Internet, all it takes is spending the weekend surfing Google, finding directions, buying the write supplies, and making the wedding invitations yourself.

Of course, creating your own wedding invitations takes creativity. But hey, theres both the groom and the bride, so hopefully one of you two has a creative mind and can get the job done!

Another thing you can do is take charge of the wedding favors yourself. If you are going to be handing out wedding favors, you don't need to pay someone to make them for you. Who knows the guests better than yourself? Take the time and deal with the wedding favors yourself.

There are numerous other ways to save money by taking a little more control over the wedding. For example, if you go shopping for a wedding dress, consider buying a used one. Yes, it doesn't sound like fun, but who will really notice? Do you really want to spend a ton of money on a dress you will (hopefully) only wear once?

Another way to save money is on the honeymoon. While it is easy to say "lets just splurge on the honeymoon," remember that this is just one trip of many that you will be spending together. Take the time to research a romantic, yet affordable getaway. There will be a lot of pricey attractions that seem fun. Often, these attractions aren't worth the cost. The main attraction of the honeymoon is your spouse, and spending time with him or her is free!
